i just have a few things on that, otherwise i agree.

i really dont think it matters about editing software! for instance, when you buy a camera, it usually comes with a disk that has a basic editing software. i think that editing should not be part of the citeria

i also dont think it matters what kind of camera you have. yes, dslrs are better, but i can take "advanced" pictures with a point-and-shoot. as well as a total newbie could take pictures with a dslr, but alot of the time, an advanced photographer would take better pictures with a point and shoot than a newbie on a dslr. i happen to know people who dont know what they are doing, but they do indeed have dslrs, because they are financially fortunate.

Yup, that's kind of what I was trying to say, just...more convoluted. lol! I see what you're saying, I agree about the camera types as well.

The difficulty with setting up a separate category is that you probably need another category for pictures taken at shows since one has even less control over lighting, background, etc., than in the wild. I would think, anyway, that experience teaches a person how to get good photos in situ, as good as in a studio.

I didn't mean to suggest a separate category. What I think will happen is that only photos with black backgrounds will be submitted. It's the perfect backdrop to make color's pop. It won't be worth while for people who don't have the studio type setup to enter.

I don't have a studio but make pics against a black background anyways. I just drape a piece of black cloth over a piece of cardboard, stick it and the plant on a chair near a window and shoot away. Can hardly be called a studio.

But I do agree that there's a risk that the black (or other color) background shots are more likely to win because they are more pleasing to the eye (and with popping colors) than a natural background shot, even if it's well composed.

But I'm just to to say 'oh whatever' to the debates since this is supposed to be fun, not a headache. Nothing to win but the glory, and IMO I find the judges comments much more interesting than knowing who won. I learned a lot from the comments already.

Sorry! I didn't mean to make it a headache for anyone. I'll go back to my corner now.
