Why are species so much more difficult to care for than hybrids? Feel free to heckle me for the noobie question.

J, for me, who grows on window sills, it's temperature.
Many species (phals) are warm growing and I can't supply that.

It isn't that species are more difficult, it's the requirements that are a bit more demanding.

P.S.
You won't get heckled on this Board. It's the friendliest you will find and everyone was a noobie at some point.

There won't be any heckling
It's a good question

I think there are two lines of thought on the subject...and I think both make sense

I prefer species...besides the fact that they are a natural occurence I like that I can see (pretty closely) exactly what it likes/needs when I research it.

Then there are hybrids which take (hopefully) the "good" traits from each parent and combine to create a plant that has "likes" from each of it's parents that can be combined for "easier" growing.

In truth, it really doesn't matter to me...I love them all

Often hybrids can cope with a wider range of conditions, because as Sue has said they combine traits from their parents. Species on the other had are perhaps more taylored to the particular area they come from and the conditions they would get there, so you have to try and reproduce that for them.

I very very slightly favour species because they are closer to orchids in nature. Also I am starting to like the hybrids which have destintive features close to one or more of their parents (so those not to heavily crossed).

I am just not interested in any hybrids unless natural. Species are so much more interesting to me. I love to see the variation.

Same here. Species or primary hybrids. I can make exceptions.

But I like species way better. some Cattleya hybrids are over the top and a bit hideous.

I like what looks natural.
I have 2 Onc Twinkles that I like a lot but when I saw the parent Onc ornithorynchum I thought it looked better than any hybrid. I would still get a Miltonidium Rosy Sunset.

Also I was considering a Bolleopetalum at TJ for 9.99 but unsure. I have an Eulophia graminea now blooming. tiny flowers. More interesting tan many Onc intergenerics. In the beginning I got hybrids now I feel I want to have what happens naturally in nature. Some hybrids are like a woman that had too much botox and plastic surgery. I prefer someone with lines and bags under her eyes but natural loooking. Yet I feel primary hybrids are more acceptable

I don't even pay attention to weither its a hybrid or species, I just look at the flowers, if it looks good, it is good, so I have no preference really.
