I carefully walked around this one. Both Ghost Orchid and Encyclia tampensis are on CITES but also available legally by way of stem and seed propogation. I didn't want to start something, just wanted everything to be "clean" because we are an international Board and should represent all things right and legal in the Orchid-Growing world

I just couldn't resist. Reading his posts I had to chuckle.
I have a few that are on the CITES list too, so I'm glad it's clear. You're right, we've got to keep things legal here.

I totally agree with Ross here without trying to offend anyone, but I think (maybe my german vein ) clear rules don't let room for misunderstanding and nobody should feel offended with that
and now, let's start

Just my two cents... please, no offense to anyone, but I don't see anything illegal on a photo. The beauty is being shown, not the plant being uprooted from where it is . I want to believe that there's nothing in no law saying that it is forbidden to photograph an endangered species. On the contrary . It is just and only what you can do. Just photograph. Not touch. I believe that the diversity of life must be shown, not hidden. If you find a protected species on a trip in the wild, take a photograph, leave it as it is and give no publicity of where it is, you are doing your part. I believe that a calendar like the one planned here is just the celebration of the beauty nature presented us, and nothing further than this .
In the end, all and every wild orchid is in danger now, not only those on CITES. The reasons are known.
Finally, a calendar cannot be compared to this forum, for example, in terms of the publicity a photo gets. If such a rule make sense for the calendar…

I gotta go with Mauro on this. Exclusion of wild orchids from the calendar on the basis that it might provoke a mass exodus of orchids from nature due to over collection (or any collection) does not make sense to me. If that were true, then we would have to take down all the pics of wild orchids here on the site that are shown every day. I think our resident ghost hunters would be very upset with such a rule and so would all of those who enjoy seeing wild orchids en situ. If pics were being posted on how to collect endangered species, then I would agree that those pics could and would be considered offensive. Short of that, I think pics of wild orchids in the calendar (if they qualify of course!) and on the OB in general help educate those of us who are not priveledged to see them in the wild. Just my or .

Hi all, I just want to let everyone understand where I come from with wild orchids. First let me say that I'm very fortunate to live close to a large variety of native orchids (that all but a couple are consider endanger) and enjoy very much to locate and photograph. Mostly due to my long time love of hiking, secondly my new found love of orchids. As far as my conservation ideals. I will gladly give my entire collection to anyone that can find a wild collected plant on my property. Almost all of Florida's wild orchids are available commercially. I don't own many species and the ones I do have, I don't have worthy photos. I just felt like I needed to explain myself.
I was only going to submit a ghost orchid picture if my other photos are not good enough. Anyway I hope this clears up any misunderstanding you may have about me and what I do.

I guess that would be OK.

Also, I went back and re-read the rules and right above the line that says "Images must be submitted unsized" there is a line that says "You may post a sized version." Which one is correct? Im also not sure how to find out the "dpi" stuff. Marty, can I just send you my 2 pics and you accept/reject them?

Well...there are 2 things at play here. For forum posting you don't need print quality photos. Ie. the screen can display only 72dpi images, while print can display much higher dpi. In posts you don't need large images, that's why you'd resize them before posting. On print, you want as good an image as possible to make sure when printed it's sharp and crisp. If you sized an image to post it in the forum, most likely that image will not be good for the calendar.
As far as wild orchids photos go, I don't personally see a problem and don't feel that a photo of a CITES orchid will make people go out and start collecting wild plants. Intention of the rules is not for participants to find ways around them, but just to serve as a common sense guideline.
I didn't want people submitting photos of amazing plants from orchid shows that they attended, but more of our own community plants. Everyone grows a ton of different stuff and I'm sure we can pick 13 photos from almost 6000 users. As for wild ones, what better way to immortalize a wild orchid than on a calendar.
