I thought the same thing! These "tree rats" ain't stupid. At least not the ones around here. I've classified ours as: Grey Squirrels, tend to sit and let you shoot at them, but really hard to hit. If you do get "the shot" and hit them, they don't die easily. They are attracted to the chirping sound one often makes when calling a cat.
Black Squirrels, tend not to sit around and let you shoot at them, but really easy to hit if you get the shot and drop dead with one well-placed pellet. Chirping at Blacks is pretty useless to get them to stop and look.
Surprizingly, I have hit and killed way more blacks than greys this last summer. My grandson calls any squirrel Lucky. So we have Lucky The Black and Lucky the Grey.
