I think it's really unfair that men burn more calories than women. Hubby and I are both on diets just now where you eat based on a number of calories calculated from current height, weight and whether you are male or female. Hubby get's 500 extra calories a day than me, most of which is because he is male! How unfair is that!
Most men have a higher proportion of muscle to - uhhh, the rest of the body than do most women. Muscle burns more calories per gram just sitting there than does - uhhh, the rest of the body. So most men have a higher basal metabolic rate than most women.
This is the reason a lot of people recommend anybody wanting to lose weight do some weight training exercises. All people can increase muscle mass this way. The increased muscle mass leads to burning more calories at rest.
