coelogyne assamica - brown buds

Hello,

This coelogyne assamica came to me all the way from China and all the poor thing's roots had died. It's now got the beginnings of some new roots and two new growths happening.

It seems to be trying to produce flowers, but the buds are brown. They aren't dry to the touch, and they continue to grow, but it doesn't look right to me.

What could be causing this problem? Humidity, fungus? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Crisis averted! The brown just seems to be a kind of sheath. Forgive me, I'm not very experienced with coelogynes.

I accidentally broke one off and there seems to be a healthy bud underneath.

With dead roots, new growth is compromised. Did you repot to determine that all roots were dead? I'd keep humidity elevated for now but sounds like it will come back for you.

I did repot it and all the roots were dessicated. Hopefully it continues to bounce back. I honestly didn't think it would make it this far, but I assume blooms are a good sign, unless it's just the plant's swan song.

The other one I purchased along with this one is doing quite well, but it is a phalaenopsis malipoense and thus the roots are hardier.

These plants are definitely well-traveled!

This should be a interesting flower to say the least. If you know someone with access to Orchid Wiz there are some very helpful cultural notes available on this species.
We must look after species plants so often I suggest we tend to place more focus on Hybrids.

Lucky for you! I recently bought a Coel. mooreana in bud but the buds turned brown shortly after receiving it like yours and the spike died. I also repotted it after receiving it, which likely contributed to the demise. The plant and new growth is doing fine though.
