Default Unknown Coelogyne sp care?

When to my first local orchid society meeting this week. Right at the end on the way out a guy gave me a little Coelogyne specimen or maybe a hybrid with Coelogyne. It happened pretty quickly and I didn't get details of how to care for it. I've done a little research online about Coel. and their dry period, but I could use a little advice.

It has 4 pseudo bulbs from 1 to 2 inches tall. They are pretty smooth with no shriveling. The oldest has no leaves and the second oldest's leaves are dying off.

Here is my plan, let me know how it sounds.

I keep it in my kitchen with a moderately bright window but no direct light. It is on a pebble tray with water to keep the humidity up. No direct water until I see growth in the spring. Perhaps an occasional misting. If the bulbs shrivel too much or the newer leaves start to drop I would probably start watering again? Not sure.

I also have a Coelogyne xyrekes. Larger p bulbs and a bit of shriveling. But I was planning on basically the same treatment for it as well.

http://Coelogyne.com has good info also. And you're sure it's a Coel.? I have a xyrekes too, keeping it in intermediate temps, indirect light and reg.fert. as I expect spiking next month. Some pbulb shriveling occurs but you don't want it to be extreme.Your plan sounds good.Post fotos when possible!

Thank you. I think you mean Coelogynes.com Without the plural I get a spam site.

Pretty sure it is either a hybrid with a major Coel component or a species, but beyond that it was a quick, "welcome to our society, here is a gift for you." kind of thing.

When either of them do something interesting I will post.

I bet you could call the person for more information, or ask somebody else what it is if you don't remember the person's name.

Some coels don't need or want a dry period. Some like it a bit dryer (just a little dry time between waterings) but some like more consistent moisture. Some are cooler growers and some are warm growers. Most like fairly bright light.

I would contact the person who gave it to you to find out which one you have. In the meantime, bright light and water when it's about dry. That should hold you until you can get more detailed info on the plant.

Most Coels are not even close to being as delicate as they are reputed to be. Not. Even. Close. They are a great group of orchids and I would never have given most of mine away if not for the fact that they eventually got far too big for my growing space. LOVE coels!!

Thanks for the tips. I assume I'll see him at next month's meeting. I just joined the society so I don't have any contacts or way of reaching anybody yet. Until then I'll just keep it (and my other coel) on the dryish side unless they start showing signs of growth.

Katrina -- I seem to find that most species of orchids aren't as difficult as they are reputed to be. Couldn't you have gotten rid of some furniture or something?

My "grow room" is what non-orchid people would call their living and dining rooms. The only furniture being orchid shelves. There is no more furniture to be removed! My husband is very tolerant but he might move into the realm of intolerance if I were to take over the family room or his office. LOL! And I ain't giving up my bed. XD
