'Coelogyne mayeriane' help
Default 'Coelogyne mayeriane' help

I have a Coelogyne that I cannot get to bloom. The tag says mayeriane x self but I can't really seem to find any info on that species at all.

I have my orchids in an exposed basement with west and south windows which may not sound ideal but the majority of my orchids do pretty well. I can get any phal to bloom (both species and hybrids), encyclia, bulbophylum, cattleya etc. Even the ones that I can't get to routinely bloom I have at least had luck with once in while, but absolutely nothing with this guy.

I just read that other coelogynes need a rest period so I've decided to cut back on water and I moved it to a south window with stronger light. Does this sound like a good move? Any suggestions to get him to bloom this winter?

(I apologize for any genus/species spelling errors, it's late )

Isopes says to grow this in semi-shade and hot temps but nothing about watering, maybe check the rainfall amount and months for the habitats listed.......hope that helps somewhat!

Oh, good website. Even if it doesn't help for this orchid it just looks like a great resource. Thanks!

I have some coelogyne a and am hit and miss with them. I will just relay the info that is on orchid wiz, hopefully it will help you.

Light 3000-4000 fc. Bright light should be somewhat filtered or diffused during direct, midday sun. Strong air movement at all times.

Temp- throughout year days average 88-92 and nights 72-73 with a diurnal range of 16-20.

Humidity- near 85% most of the year dropping to 80% for a month or so in summer. Humidity averages about 90% for 2-3 months in winter. Water- rainfall is very heavy all year. Cultivated plants should be watered heavily while actively growing but drainage must be excellent and conditions around roots should never become stale or soggy.

Fertilizer- 1/4-1/2 recommended strength applied weekly when plants actively growing....there is more info on the fertilizing if you want it let me know....send me a message.

No rest period.

Media -plants can be mounted on cork or a tree fern slab if humidity is high and plants can be watered several times a day. Grown in shallow pots or baskets...lined with sphagnum.shredded tree fern fibre mixed with about 10% perlite, 10%chopped spag and 10% charcoal produces excellent results.

Coelogyne should be reported as infrequently as possible because the shock can delay blooming for up to 3 years.

Ok, that gives you some things to work on....having done this....I should check, cause I'm sure that I have one.....it is spelled mayeriana by the way. Hope I've helped.

I have my Coelogynes in the south facing bay window....my Coelogyne marthae is similar to your plant but my Coelogyne ovalis is hard to contain in a pot and it likes to go all over the place so it is mounted….Brenda got the culture correctly ; but your plant is equatorial meaning they come from an area where there is only two seasons=the hot humid summers and the monsoon rains....discover a constant watering regimen for yourself and your plant then stick to it=do not keep changing your routine(I water every other day in winter and in summer I water every day using fast draining media+ I have not moved the plant from when I first repotted when I got it from the mail to check out the roots) these plants are tenacious and hardy for they have bulbs to store food=I left for 2 weeks and they survived=I will never do it to them ever again!
tip: do not wet the leaves=they have a thin sensitive kind and they are prone to fungi and dark spots from cold water droplets burned by the sun....I painstakingly wipe each leaf clean with neem oil using cotton balls and avoid sunlight from 11am to 3pm(luckily my neighboring tall buildings do that for me)

Thank you for all the info. I'm pretty much doing it all wrong according to that so I will make some changes! But what does this mean? I don't know what "report" means I guess.

That is a typing error, sorry, the word is REPOTTED.

After I looked up this info I went and found that I also have one and am also doing all the wrong things. So I've pulled it out into more daylight and will start giving it more water. Good luck..hopefully one of us will see blooms one day from this one.

Hi Folks, my Coloegyne mayerianna has bloomed for the 3 years I have had it. This year after blooming in Feb/Mar I repotted it so I don't expect blooms next Spring. I keep mine in a South window and water it all year including winter tho I cut the water by 40/50 %. Typical Cattleya mix.

I grow several Coel and grow all of mine in sphag lined net pots, seedling bark mix, Catt light and never let them dry out.

The net pots let air to the roots but stay very wet. I know some say they don't like their roots disturbed but I've found them to be tough and not react to repotting.
