My Coelogyne (was thought to be C.mossiae, but turns out to be Unchained Melody- most likely) has developed a very strange new growth. At first it looked like a normal pseudobulb. Then it started developing 4 or 5 leaves instead of the usual two. Then a flower spike started to develop from the top of the PB. Two buds started to develop and then dried up. The third bloomed into a normal looking flower. Please see attached photos.
Since then it has produced a second flower.
All this while the PB is less than half the normal size, and is still covered by it's protective sheath/leaflets (?).
This plant has flowered twice before: both times the spike developed in the "normal" way from the base of the newest mature PB.
I understand that some species of Coelogynes produce flower spikes from the top of the PB. But this plant seems to be doing both.
Has anyone any experience with this? I'd be very interested to know.
Cheers.
