Smile Coelogyne mossiae

I purchased this Coelogyne mossiae in 07/08. The 'plant' was 10 old leafless pseudobulbs, the largest p-bulb was 1-1/2" tall w/ a pair of 5" long leaves and 1 new growth; all in a 7" round pot.
This summer the 'new growth' developed into a 3" tall pseudobulb w/ a pair of 10" leaves And now there are two pendant, about 10" long, 7 flowered inflorescence.
The flowers are 2.5" across and are white with yellow marking the midlobe of the lip. I also like the deciduous tan floral bracts.
The flowers are reported to be fragrant, but I have not detected any fragrance.
Did not know what to expect when I purchased the plant. A very happy surprise

Default Coel mossiae

Faz,

Coelogyne Unchained Melody was registered by David Banks in 2/8/1995. The originator is unknown. The cross is Coelogyne cristata x Coelogyne flaccida.

Coelogyne cristata looks very similar to Coel mossiae. Coelogyne flaccida is different, petals very star shaped, smaller lip, reddish-brown on lobes.

Your Coelogyne Unchained Melody seems to favor its Coelogyne cristata parent in flower shape and color.

The flower petals/sepals on the Coel mossiae seem to be taking on more of a twist with time.

Charlie

PS Need to get a pretty pot and retake this picture

Very nice coelogyne - I just found this old post from February but couldn't help commenting. This is actually most likely Coelogyne Unchained Melody, which has been mistakenly sold as Coelogyne mossiae for literally decades. It is incorrectly labeled in almost all collections and even in greenhouses of universities and botanical gardens.

I have only seen one single photo of a genuine Coel. mossiae and it is here.

A nice plant, nonetheless. But not mossiae.

Default Unchained Melody bloom

Hi,
How long do the flowers last? My flowers opened around Dec. 03 and were wilted by Dec.20. This is a plant I bought as "C.mossiae." It seems clear now that it is actually C. Unchained Melody from the pictures of flowers and pseudobulbs I've seen on the net (also the strange "dungy" odour some have reported).
What do I do now? Cut he spike at the base, and continue the dry rest period until February?
I'm a newbie, and would welcome any advice.

Happy Holidays!

Ram

I'm not a Coelogyne expert at all by any far stretch! I do know that isn't mossiae, but it's really quite nice, and is probably Unchained Melody
