Dendrochilum formosanum blooming
Default Dendrochilum formosanum blooming

I bought this this past fall at the Salt Lake Orchid Show (from Orchid Dynasty). It's now in full bloom, and is really gorgeous. I'm estimating 1000-1200 blooms - there are at least 30 inflorescences with a typical one having 40 flowers.

I understand they do not like having their roots disturbed, so we will see how delicate I can be repotting after it finishes blooming - probably just adding a little more sphagnum around it in a slightly larger pot. I've heard they like terracotta. I was also advised, living in the desert, to just plant it in sphagnum, which is what it's in now. Photo is in front of a window to see the whole plant, but normally it's growing in front of an LED plant light on a humidity tray. Once the inflorescences are done it will fit back in a glass case for extra humidity. I probably just need to buy a bigger glass cabinet but need to sort out space.

Welcome! And that's a spectacular plant.

If you have trouble finding information about it, look under Dendrochilum uncatum ... Ddc formosanum is considered a synonym. With reclassification of all the Dendrochilums under Coelogyne, that would make it Coelogyna uncata.

Thanks! That's helpful for sure. I'm pretty new and it's hard to keep track of name changes.

All of us have difficulty keeping track of the name changes... I didn't know this one, looked it up. Two resources to bookmark: Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia (IOSPE) and Kew Plants of the World Online In the scientific world, Kew is generally considered to be the definitive source (though some do debate it... above my pay grade... )
