my ovalis' leaves are browning at the base and I'm worried that they may fall off if disturbed. does anyone know why this may be? is this natural when it is in flower as this is the first bud to appear. it feels dry in texture as opposed to the goopy texture I'd expect for a fungal infection, but infection is still a possibility?

any help would be much appreciated!

Coelogynes prefer high humidity and lots of water. Leaves may brown if those are inadequate.

Could it be sunburn?

Generally Crassula, Haworthia and Coelogyne wouldn't live side by side and each be happy. They have different growing preferences.

Hello!

I mist the bark every other morning and the leaves daily. the room has 60% humidity on average, so if it is a moisture problem then I reckon it would be down to the medium not holding moisture adequately (the pseudobulb that this problem is occurring with has a bud so I am yet to reply as I don't want to disturb it). I keep it with the others as they have been doing very well where they are.

I don't think sunburn is a problem either given how localised the issue is as I'd expect it to be concentrated where the sun hits the leaf. In addition, the windowsill doesn't get much direct sunlight.

Is it possible that it's a stress response from the small pot?

Coelogynes are among the most thirsty of all orchids. Misting is not going to be enough water.

I'll give her a real soak, thank you so much! For future reference, am I to take it that leaves browning will be an earlier sign of underwatering than wrinkled pseudobulbs? Mine seem to be unblemished.

I don't know the answer to that. I know it varies between genera but I don't know about Coelogyne. Depending on your medium it might even be happy with daily watering.

I might add you must always watch for spider mites on thin-leafed orchids in the house. This doesn't look like spider mite damage, but if the entirety of the leaves were involved, I would think of that.

I have lightly increased watering, but the forming bud looks like a victim of wet rot to me. I'm unsure if it's relates to the original issue or is instead a seperate fungal entity taking advantage of a plant in stress, but would it be best to let it be and keep up higher watering or is a haircut in order?

At first I was surprised the buds were still alive. This is not an expected development. I still doubt it's a disease, and more likely related to cultural issues. Leaf and bud loss is common in orchids in bud with insufficient water or humidity. Diseases are uncommon in situations of low relative humidity.

How long have you had this plant? The seasons have changed. Could the ambient humidity be lower with central heating?

I've had it since the 5th, so it may just be the transfer from the nursery I got it from? I'll keep it in a more humid room and see if that helps! thank you!

Since the 5th of November? Yes, the leaf and bud issues are probably related to going from a wet, humid environment to a drier home. That commonly happens when orchids are moved in bud from a greenhouse into a home.
