I unpotted my Pleione formosana today, only to find it seems to be initiating new growth. The last leaf dropped just over a week ago. It is currently being stored bareroot in a cool-ish place (probably around 50 degrees at night). I could probably find somewhere cooler if needed. Should I just pot it up and treat it like I would if it was starting growth in spring? Any advice would be appreciated!
I used to put them bareroot, inside paper bags, in the fridge around 5ºC (41 F). Looking at my experience with Pleiones, I wouldn't worry about it. It doesn't look like that but they are somewhat dormant, especially if you put them in a cool place.
As a side note, now I don't unpot them. I leave them in the pot, outside where its cool and somewhat protected from the rain (although they get some).
Those are next years flower buds. I’d put them in the fridge. Mine go into plastic baggies with some vermiculite.
I take them out in March and pot them in a New Zealand sphagnum moss / chunky perlite mix.
Thanks for all the advice! My main concern about putting them in the fridge is that my fridge is also full of food (I would rather it was full of orchids, though I do like food), which restricts air movement and thus makes it prone to unintentionally becoming a freezer.
