Our Dendrochilum Season Has Begun - Orchid Board

I have 3 species of Dendrochilums, D. magnum, D. glumaccium, and D. wenzelii
They have always bloomed in that order.
D. magnum is now in bloom.
D. glumaccium will follow closely behind with D. wenzelii trailing a bit further.

These plants are usually kept hanging under our Geometry Tree.
I have begun moving those blooming onto our back lanai.

Per IOSPE all are fragrant.
Because of keeping them outdoors hanging under a tree and probably also the effects of the eruption, I have never noted that they were fragrant before.

D. magnum is very noticeable throughout the house in the evenings even though it is on the back lanai, not inside the house.

D. glunaccium is in bud and will be blooming soon.
When D. glumaccium and D. wenzelii are actually in bloom, I'll add new posts to this thread with photos of them.

Always the one for weird questions: First, good to hear from you again! Second, what orchid is on the far right? And tulips? In Hawaii? Is that possible?

I attached a square of bathroom wall tile to the raft, piled some Chilean sphagnum on that, and finally I tied the Dendrochilum atop that.
While you can't see it, the RH side of the orchid is actually a fairly large Bulbo. dearei hybrid.
I have had several of these Bulbo dearei hybrid types for about 4 years now. In a fit of wanting something new, I bought them at a very good price.

I have a few orchids I cannot bloom.
The Bulbo. dearei types seem to want warmer winter nights, while a Dendrobium farmeri hybrid seems to want cooler winter nights. They grow very well vegetatively. I simply cannot bloom them without taking heroic measures.
Ain't a' gonna do it.
I take them home, attach them to a tree and tell them to fly. They either make it or they don't, most have, some haven't.

I was wondering if someone would note the tulips.
Those are fake cloth tulip buds sent to my galfriend by her daughter for Mother's Day.
They do look and feel real.
I keep getting irritated because the buds haven't opened. Then I remember why.

The orchid on the far RH side is the D. glumaccium with buds getting ready to open soon. I'll add a post with a photo here when they do.
The D. wenzelii has not budded yet, so is still out in the tree.

Very cool. I am somewhat the same. I try and of they like it here, we have a long and beautiful relationship...if not, they grow and don’t bloom and end up in a tree lol

Nice to see ya around again Voyager! And am happy for now that the erupting and lava and etc are in the past. That must be a relief.

I always try for a few years to grow just about anything. And won't do anything heroic... they have to deal with me, not the other way around. I used to slowly kill anything that didn't like my culture, and eventually they'd go to the compost. No use in hanging from a tree, since I haven't found any that enjoy snow.

Now my latest cultural excursion... if the orchid won't thrive and bloom for me I don't wait as long. I throw it in a box and send it to DirtyCoconuts, who then throws it in the tree.

It's working well for me, and pretty sure I've got some nice orchids growing down in Florida.

PS Nice catch on the tulips, Dolly. You would be the one to notice tulips in Hawaii and ask the question.

OK,
Dendrochilum glumaccium has bloomed.
I waited almost too long to take the photo.
Not all of the sprays are fully bloomed out yet, but the flowers on some of them are beginning to fade.

Also, D. magnum was very fragrant.
I get nothing off this one.
IOSE says all 3 are fragrant.
We'll we'll see about wenzelii when it gets here.
I looked at some old photos of these Dendrochilums.
I thought they were pretty big when I brought them home.
I was surprised at how much they've grown since then.
They are getting pretty big.

EDIT:
I just went out and measured the raft to be able to judge the size in the pics.
The rafts all three of these are in are 12" on the edges.

D. wenzelii has not yet begun to bloom.
It has always been a bit later than the other two, a pic when it does.

At long last, Dench. wenzelii is getting ready to bloom.
I just saw several new leaves where the new buds were beginning to separate out becoming identifiable.
Little doubt it'll be a few weeks before they'll be ready for pics.

They seemed to bloom more closely together before.
But, D. wenzelli was always the last to do so.
Then again, it might be nothing more than perception, and/or the post eruption plant strange happenings that have been going on.

Going out for pics of an in bloom orchid.
Not yet sure if it'll be in the Dendrobium or Epidendrum forum.
They keep changing the species name on me.
I'll post them after I get them.
