Default Suara Rick Beverly

Just been informed by the Royal Horticultural Society that my new orchid hybrid registration has been accepted.

Suara Rick Beverly
(Epi. cordigera var rosea X Dialc. Controversy)

Suara = Epidendrum X Caularthron X Laelia X Cattleya

They named this new cross after me. Woo Hoo!

I'm enclosing a copy of the first bloom of my seedling. I have 2 others that are starting to shoot spikes, but it may take another 2 months before they bloom.

Congratulations!!

When you indicated that they named the orchid after you ----- you actually meant that that you chose to name it after yourself (as part of the registration form procedure), and they accepted the details that you requested. So you named the orchid after yourself - basically, right?

Actually no. My last name is SU.

Since this is an intergeneric hybrid consisting of:

Epidendrum x Caularthron x Laelia x Cattleya

I've been told that combo will now be registered as Suara. I originally thought it was already taken, but was corrected by RHS that Encyclia cordigera was only recognized as Epidendrum still.

So that combo will now be known as a Suara hybrid.

When you filled out the registration form - you put down a name for this new genus, right?

If not, then did the RHS ask you what genus you wanted to call it? Or are you saying that RHS automatically took your surname and named this genus as 'Suara' by appending a 'ara' on the end without first asking for your input about what the genus would officially be called?

Enough already. You are coming across as pedantic for no worthy reason.

The remarks you made were uncalled for.

The other member mentioned that RHS named an orchid after them.

I'm trying to establish if it was RHS that actually arrived at the genus by themselves without any input from the member. Or whether it was the member that requested the base name ... eg. 'Su', and RHS then proceeded to ask the member whether they wanted 'Su' + 'ara', and arrived at 'Suara' upon a mutual agreement.

My question(s) is/are related to this.

If RHS did indeed come up with the genus name all by themselves without the member having any say in it, then that's fine. I don't mind that. That's what I'm trying to find out.

Southpark's question is a valid one.

If you look at the registration form, it requests a genus as well as two grex names (preferred and backup), and while I know that one may propose previously unused grex names, nowhere does it specify whether that is an option for a hybrid genus not previously registered.

Orchidsarefun - you previously mentioned that you had a genus named after you. Did you request that when applying for a registration, or if it wasn't your registration, did the applicant do so?
