Default Pot. (Rlc.) Dick Smith 'Aloha spirit'

This is perfection to me...very saturated colors and a wonderful, sweet scent. The smell is a bit reminiscent of sugar cookies to me.

Height: 12 inches, 16 inches including the pot
Bloom season: unknown, but I have a second growth making buds now, so let's say winter.
Flower size: 5 inches
Morning fragrant.

That's fantastic! Are you growing in moss in plastic food containers?

It is in a plastic food container with lots of ventilation holes poked in. It has a top layer of sphagenum moss, but the medium is mostly volcanic pumice. There is two small pieces of moss on the drainage holes also. I'd say it is 90 percent pumice overall.

I have no idea what the difference is between those clones. They look very similar to my eyes. Perhaps someone else knows?

From what I have seen, the parents are the same, (Hisako Akatsuka x Volcano Lightnig). The name of the cloning is what changes. I noticed that the first flowering in October was different from this month, here I show it.

Gorgeous plants! I am considering getting the Paradise as my first cattleya. Would you consider this cross exceptionally hard to care for? I hope to put it in my new large, south to SE (winter) window at work. I have completely avoided cattleya's due to the light requirements. I am not confident this will be enough light though (4' overhang and who knows what kind of energy film etc may be on the window). My alternative is my large east facing window at home.

Back to naming fundamentals... the grex name Pot.(Rlc.) Dick Smith is given to all plants that come from the same parent hybrids Hisako Alatsuka x Volcano Lightning. Those could come from the exact same plants (cultivars) or different plants with the same hybrids in THEIR parentage. Even from the same parent plants, there will be variation (sometimes a little, sometimes a lot) in the plants produced from seed. (Just like children from the same parents look different) If the cross is made with DIFFERENT plants, the likely genetic difference is likely to be even greater. (That's a "remake" of a cross... either different plants or even the same plants being crossed to get a new seed pod). So the "cultivar" names apply only to the vegetatively (not seed) produced progeny of a particular plant (mericlone or division), which are genetically identical to the parent (at least theoretically... even then, mutations can happen in the cloning process).

So when you see different cultivar names for a particular grex, they were cloned from different plants of the same cross (could be siblings from a particular seed pod, or could be from another crossing of the same specific plants, or different cultivars of the same hybrids)
