Question Dehydrated Cattalaya orchids

Help. I recieved 4 Cattalaya orchids in the mail today and they were dehydrated. Is it safe to soak them 24 hours to rehydrate them? Leaves look ok. Bulbs are a little shriveled and lots of hollow dead roots. Minimal new growth. Thank you for any info.

Welcome to the Orchid Board.

Yes, it's fine to soak them for a while.

Don't cut off any roots! You can't tell what's alive and what's dead! You really can't! Don't believe anything you watch on YouTube about cutting off roots!

They need roots to survive long enough to make new growth, which will make new roots.

Linden Burzell spoke to the Desert Valley Orchid Society last Thursday, May 17. He said he saves dehydrated, bare-root Cattleyas by soaking them in water, half-way up the pseudobulbs, for months, until they make new roots. Change the water often if you do this. I will post lecture notes here at some time after the US Memorial Day holiday.

Hi, My name is Mary R. I live in Northern Indiana near Lake Michigan. Thank you for your response. Tell you about myself... I have loved orchids for years. 20 years ago I had 30 orchids but with kids, work, 4-H and running a farm they have died. My kids are grown and the animals are gone now so I have time to work on my collection and treat each orchid properly. In the last 6 months my orchid collection has grown. I now have 58 orchids. I absolutely love each and every one.

Welcome to the board, Mary (from an old 4-H alumni). How lucky you are to have the space and the time for that number of orchids. Lucky orchids, too, to have someone so devoted to their care.

Thank you. I have the space now but we will see when they grow up.. lol. Some of them may have to be moved to my office. I already have 3 beautiful blooming Phals in my office so my customers can enjoy them.

My Cattleya orchid has leaves that are one by one turning yellow. Growing under lights. It's in bloom and there are lots of bloosm; however, something is not right. What might be happening?

Orchpres1, is this the 1st bloom for your Cattalaya? Did you recently buy it in bloom?
