I finally got a bud to almost completely open. This plant made six buds and all but one started to open before failing. I know this is bud blast which could be from my growing environment, but I have never had such bad luck.

What gives? Is there anything special that could cause this such as me fertilizing when it is in bud?

I don't know. It's a pretty bloom. No other Cattleya does this for you?

I think Catts need to be kept at least slightly moist while in bud and flower, and not dry out completely.

Changing humidity from higher to lower, and temperature in either direction, can also cause bud blast.

Every so often I get a cattleya that bud blasts, but this plant blasted buds off of three growths over the span of a month. That amount of blasting and the fact that they opened before shriveling up was weird.

Yes, true. It is weird to me that this one was so sensitive when other catts I have are very reliable.

I have the answer for the blasting. This plant seems to like to pollinate itself as the buds open. check out the swollen ovaries. I looked at the sex organs and indeed they are anomalous and self pollinating in shape.

check out the pictures.

Here is the flower fully opened. I should have posted this weeks ago. It has a most beautiful strong fragrance. Like roses mixed with some kind of citrus fruit.
