I know some very experienced Catt growers that can't keep this one alive, since they do all their potting in spring and that isn't what the plant wants.

The trick to re-potting fussy orchids (C. dowiana, C. aclandiae, Phal-type Dendrobiums, Angraecums) during the wrong time of year and keeping the roots alive is to soak them very well first, then to carefully remove the orchid from the pot, very, very carefully remove the medium, set the orchid in very loose, dry medium (put the medium around the roots gently), do not water for a day or two until the roots have a chance to heal, stake or wire the orchid well, and definitely do not move the orchid until it is established.
I got a C. dowiana one November (sent by mistake) that was in broken-down medium and needed re-potting immediately. I potted it up so that most of the roots were exposed. When the root tips continued to grow, I knew that the orchid would be fine.
