Hello! I am new to the Orchid Board and hope I can connect with some knowledgeable growers. I have been raising orchids for many years but am self taught. So please excuse (and feel free to correct) any improper use of terminology.
I currently have a beautiful Frosty Pink with six buds (3 sets of twins). One set are buds on a long stem, one set looks like known it will do the same, but the third set is encased in a sheath. Why would this happen? What is the significance of the sheath?
I'm not familiar with this PARTICULAR hybrid, but in my experience with some other Cattleya alliance intergeneric hybrids, some will bloom both from sheaths and without sheaths - I suppose this happens when one (or more) parent species blooms from sheaths, and another parent species doesn't.
Hi Sonya,
That sounds reasonable. It may also explain why some of the bulbs have two leaves and some have one leaf.
I just checked the plant and the sheathed flower is from a two leaf bulb, the others are from a one leaf bulb. How intersting!

Thanks very much for your reply.

Mine that does this, does the opposite - the growths with one leaf get sheaths, and the growths with two leaves don't ;D
How interesting. I'll post a picture when the buds open. I have another of the same plant from a division I made, it has flowered. Beautiful and very fragrant.
