Default Cattleya walkeriana var coerulea vs Cattleya walkeriana blue moon

Greetings,

I would to ask what is the difference between Cattleya walkeriana var coerulea and Cattleya walkeriana blue moon? Both of them was walkeriana and is in blue form though.

Does all walkeriana has strong scent and only bloom once year?

Please advice

Both parents are blue forms of the species. Its just that one parent is named (Blue Moon) and one parent is not.

Cattleya walkeriana is very strongly scented and typically blooms once per year. However, many growers with excellent conditions can get more than one bloom per year.

First, there is no officially described var. coerulea for Cattleya walkeriana, so someone applies that name descriptively if they subjectively think it has blue coloration. Blue ones do exist, or course, but that is not an officially described variety or form. Cattleya walkeriana var. coerulea could be informally applied to any bluer than average member of the species, including 'Blue Moon', but it isn't really correct to write the name that way. That doesn't stop everyone from doing it.

Cattleya walkeriana 'Blue Moon' (with that specific notation) indicates one particular plant that presumably has blue coloration, and all divisions or clones that come from it carry the same name.

When Alan Koch spoke to our orchid society, he said his Cattleya walkerianas routinely bloomed twice a year in the Los Angeles area. Now that he is in northern California, they only bloom once a year. He thinks it is due to differences in day length.

Maybe in Malaysia, with excellent care, it can bloom twice a year.

My largest walk blooms twice a year. It's under lights during colder months and outside in summer and because of the year round high light...it is constantly making new growths. I had to repot it this summer so I'll see if that will make it skip a bloom or if it'll continue on, unphased.
