Sometimes old leaves just drop off. They can look like this when that happens. If it were mushy or slimy I would worry about rot, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

What a good idea for a thread! So many times I get curious about how people grow certain plants, but most posts provide only snapshots of the growing process.

As to that leaf, I hope that it is just natural leaf aging.

The leaf on the "new" growth has tons of the purple pigmentation, compared to basically none of the other leaves. There is something going on atvthe base of the new leaf, crossing my fingers, praying, doing a bloom dance, doing whatever I can to will this to be a potential bloom. I have yet to bloom a cattleya, so will be an exciting accomplishment, one that would have been literally impossible without the extensive knowledge I've gained from the great peeps of the orchidboard community. Any thoughts on the "deformity" at the base of the leaf?

Fyi, it was purchased on March 18 of last year, in bloom, which also has me jumping the gun, and over analyzing what is happening

Interesting, I have one leaf doing the same thing. Firm and healthy otherwise. Maybe others have an idea.

I can't tell what's going on either. I do sometimes get a crinkle because I think not enough water but in my case it could also be lack of humidity or both.
