C. Moscombe 'variegata' (no bloom)

Dream Catt acquired! My 2nd varigated orchid!

This is C. Moscombe 'variegata' A mutated primary hybrid of C. Mosnor X C. Sedlescombe.

It is pretty big, and has had (looks like) 2 past blooms. Two of the leaves were clipped off by the grower (Norman's).

Hope it blooms for me this year. I have no idea if it needs special treatment. Anyone have any tips?

Yours seems to have the same rot problem mine does. The 2 spots on the leaf on the left and possibly those 2 failed pbulbs. I'm wondering if it's just very susceptible to it or if they all have it lurking. Maybe why they cut a leaf too. I'd be interested to see who else has this orchid and if they experience the same problem.

To answer your question, mine is a slightly slower (than normal for a hybrid) grower, I give it the same light as the rest of my Catts, and it seems to be doing well otherwise in leca and a plastic pot.

That is the anthocyanin pigment that is the gene that leads to the expression of variegated genes in plants. It is often seen splashed randomly on varigated bromiliads and other leaves as well. When I saw it, I did not think "rot."

Obviously, the cattleya orchid here is the clone of a rare mutation. You could think of "mutation" as disease, but something that does not have a negative affect, also cannot meaningfully be called a "disease." Diversity is an evolutionary way to raise the likely hood of survival, after all.

About the Rot, I have not seen any. I will ask the owner of the nursery who sold it to me if he has seen any rot. So far, it seems like a fairly nice plant.

I'm specifically referring to the two spots on that one leaf, they look black/brown within the yellow of the variegation. From your picture, it doesn't look like a expression of anthocyanin or a "normal" color spot for a variegated plant. If on your plant it is not rot, than I'm mistaken. I just was curious as it looked exactly like what's on the leaf of one of mine that definitely is spotting of some kind of rot, and a friend of mine with this exact same plant from a different vendor has the exact same brown/black rot spots pop up too. This kid seems to have the same issue with his plant:

Wow I have never seen a variegated Catt before. I wonder if it needs calcium? I have had a couple of mine that it was the new growth and they would rot and I remembered that, some one on here that had it happen and put egg shells on there Catt's. So I got some oyster shells and the rot stopped. Just a thought.
