Cattleya nobilior, spike or growth? Male
Default Cattleya nobilior, spike or growth?

Referring to the front growth. When I first saw it I thought new growth for sure, but now I'm not so sure. I received this plant in bud last year so I haven't observed the flowering process from the beginning. Thanks in advance!

Tough to say, but I'd say growth.

This is a new Pseudobulb growth. On Cattleyas the flowers come up from the top of a set of leaves in a "sheath." The flower grows inside th esheath like a pea in a pod, and then eventually pops out. Some do not have sheaths like Iwanagaras, and come up from a spike that develops at the junction of the leaves on the top of the plant, In cattleyas the flower comes from the top junction of leaves. Growths (a new pseudobulb) start at the base of the plant (as you see in your photo).

Nobilior and walkeriana send up flower spikes from the rhizome.

It's a v. amaliae. The cross is 'Hawaiian Snowball' x 'Hawaiian Blanc''. I received it in bud last April from EBay vendor "pupsidog".

Same plant. I have my fingers crossed for these two. If they both turn out to be spikes I will be a VERY happy camper as the the plant produced only 2 spikes last year:
