I thought those blooms were big before, now I am really impressed.

I've been using this setup for a year now and I'm really liking it. I'm growing cattleyas, dends, paphs, oncs, a zygo, a phal, a bulbo, and a couple jewels in that same window! Most of them are doing well, its all about the placement. Some I'm sure would like it a little warmer and more humid. It's in my office at work so its difficult to keep humidity at or above 50%. Unfortunately, for convenience sake, they all bathe in the same bath, but none are worse for wear and I haven't had any problems. I don't do this for my orchids at home, nor would I recommend the practice.

Thanks everyone for your kind words! Only you guys could appreciate this, sometimes I get the eyebrow raise from 'normal' people

Forgot to mention this is a south facing window, so things move around seasonally to avoid leaf burning. No supplemental lighting. There's a humidifier and small fan at ground level blowing upwards.

Interesting set-up, and that's a gorgeous flower, but it may be mislabeled. Momilani Rainbow 'The Gypsy' is normally cream to yellow, with colored lip and splashed petals. It can be quite variable but this would be unusual.

Set-up is unique and well done and plants show off their appreciation.

Thank you, yes I've noticed it doesn't seem to show like others with the same name after googling it. I got it from a ST auction earlier this year from John M: W4 A2 CANADIANS: Blc. Definitely the same blooms as pictured in that thread, but different coloring from googled results. Either way, I'm enjoying it!

Are you sure the ID on that flower is correct?

Yes, I agree, I think you've got something different on your hands.

FairyInTheFlowers 11-29-2016 07:26 PM

I don't think there's any reason to question the ID. Flowers can change colour drastically based on environmental factors. They can even change colour depending on age, which is especially prominent in the Brassavola and Rhyncholaelia hybrids.

beautiful flower! I love that plant! your hanging method is really smart, I like that! good growing!

Gorgeous big blooms.

JFeathersmith 12-02-2016 01:12 PM

WOW!! Those blossoms are amazing!

I'm also admiring your hanging setup; I'm going to file some of that away for potential future use, it looks more space-efficient than trying to set up shelves.
