I wouldn't give up on the orchid, yet. I have a C. Mini Purple (currently my avatar) and the first two blooms were rather ugly, especially color-wise but also in form. I was seriously wondering if I could even find someone at my orchid society who would want it. The third blooming yielded, in my opinion, a very pleasing flower and the plant was redeemed.
I prefer small seedlings or clones just for the reason of either getting a possible winner or knowing exactly what I am getting. When you get a cross that has previously bloomed...it usually isn't the best of the bunch (though, sometimes, it does turn out that way because the plant isn't strong enough for the first few blooming cycles).
Your flower, though, is not all that bad. If it is fragrant, too, I think it makes for a very pleasing orchid. Does it bloom more than once a year? If so, you might see more color with the cooler temperatures. Good luck!

Thanks. I'm not sure if it blooms more than once a year, but I do grow cool in the winter so if it did, I might get a different result. It is a cutie. It just throws you for a loop when it is so far from the few pics I have seen of this one and absolutely no spots when there is a ton of spotting in its background. It has a lovely scent.

I have been disappointed by a couple of Cattleya hybrids, too. It really is a risk. Most of my non-Cattleya orchids are species crosses of species that do not have much variation anyway so there isn't much risk. It is the Cattleyas that have me biting my nails.
I have a bunch of small seedlings right now, all crosses, all possible surprises. I am just hoping that the flowers all open fully and look decent.... :|
Yours is nice. You could always email Fred and ask him if he has any more of what you want and maybe have him set it aside for you?
I hope your others are just what you wish! The best of luck!

I guess it is part of the fun and the disappointment of growing orchids. I have a real beautiful 1st bloom seedling (about to bloom again) that I got from Cloud's a few years back. I feel it could be an award winner if I could just get it to a judged show. So there are the wonderful results too.
I can't really try and get another because last time he came to Canada was 3 years ago so I can expect a wait of that long and shipping to Canada is just not worth it with all the paper work and cost involved.

Sometimes, I wish I could order from Cloud's. They really have some great stuff. I often google an orchid I want and...yes, it is only to be found at Clouds.
Three years...now I understand why you are so disappointed. I assumed that he came to at least one of your shows...like many other orchid vendors. Hopefully, someone else has bought one that is what you wish and will someday share a division.

Yes mine was blooming size in a 4 inch pot but it hadn't bloomed yet. Now you have me wondering. I have another one that had bloomed before (a different cross) and is going to come out with a bloom very soon. I hope it will be what I wanted. But I really think it was just how it turned out. Fred can't keep to many and I'll bet he didn't even remember what it looked like. I guess I don't know how things work in a nursery but he has to have so many seedlings and if they start blooming, not that he wouldn't pick out some nice ones to keep for breeding purposes but some just stay there and then after they dry up whom remembers what color they are.
Do get a picture from your friend when hers blooms as I would like to see it. Here's hoping it will be spotted and that you can some day get part of it. Mine has 2 new growths so we will see just how soon it will bloom again.
Leafmite I was wondering what your avatar was. Wow that is so dark purple, I want one badly. My Blue Hawaii is going to have a bloom soon also. I'm hoping it will be a bit darker but I still like it.

I hope your other one in bud will be nice. I wasn't suggesting Fred just sells the pre bloomed duds. Just that of course the best ones will be pulled. They are his orchids and his business after all. And if they are in bloom, the best ones will be taken to shows or on display in his sales area for sale. I would do the same. But when you get bloomed seedlings, they are all mysteries still, so maybe better odds of getting a special one at that time.

Oh I know you didn't mean it badly, it just made me start thinking about how things are done and I was just rambling. I actually agree with you but was just thinking when his people pull the plants they probably don't even know what they're pulling for sure. I'm guessing they are just looking at the plant. There I go rambling again.
And thanks, I'm hoping it is going to come out with lots of red on yellow.
