Cattleya/Laelia crispa var. aurea?
Default Cattleya/Laelia crispa var. aurea?

I'd been wanting a crispa, so I picked up this small seedling last year at Redlands- it was the only one left that I could find on Sunday! It seems a 'happy' little thing and has grown great, leaves more than doubled in size. Got it from a well known S.A. breeder nursery, not just a wild collected vendor.

I'm a total computer doofus though, and with sporadic searches over the year haven't been able to find any photos or descriptions of variety aurea. Has anyone seen this variety before and knows what it will end up like? Hoping it's not a colorless variety that I'll want to replace.

I find it best just to grow the seedlings out to see what the blooms turn out to be. If it is a cross, you often get a nice surprise. If it is a clone, the actual flowers can look much better than a photo. And, to be safe, bloom the orchid a few times as the blooms might improve. If not, then re-home.

Yes, I often enjoy buying unbloomed seedlings that sound interesting- sometimes you get a really pleasant surprise! (and sometimes it's 'meh', that's the chance you take) I have a batch of nodosa hyrids now I'm looking forward to.

I was just hoping someone may have heard of this variety- and that it's not 'white with a splash of yellow in the throat/on the lip'. Yellowed tepals would be fine.

Perhaps you can contact your SA source and post their pic here? I'm sure they have pics of the parents? Would be educational for us as I've never heard of an aurea form of crispa...
