SVO is Sunset Valley Orchids?

Yes it is. What you do with that very dangerous knowledge is up to you.

Met Fred Clarke of SVO a few times and he's a great guy! His breeding and plants are top notched. You CANNOT go wrong with any plant from there! Hint hint!

And he is coming to Alberta, Canada in June and Eastern Canada (Ont. and Quebec) in Oct.) of this year.

I have nothing bad to say either except one thing which disappointed a few people and took me by surprise. Several years ago he came to Alberta to the Edmonton society's meeting to speak and sell plants. I live in Saskatchewan, 500 km away but was so eager to hear him speak and get a few plants, that I offered to drive there, spend the night in a hotel and pick up a small pre-order of plants that our society put in. I myself put my pre-order in very early to get 5 particular plants. When I picked up the order, he told me he had substituted a number of the plants for similar ones because he needed them for a larger order. ????? He didn't apologize or bat an eye. I had 3 or my 5 swapped out. 3 other members had one each swapped out. I thought that was wrong. When I ordered mine he thanked me for my order and said they were set aside for me. Since they are named and described with detail, it was them I wanted, not something else. And he offered no discount because they were swapped. I had heard nothing but good about Fred, so I was very disappointed.

I still love his plants and crosses (well, not all of course), so this June I am once again going there to pick up a small pre-order for our society. But lesson learned, we will stress, no substitutions.

That was sad about the subsitutions, I would have been upset too. I think his plants are really healthy and there is always a difference between his seedlings and ones I bought from other greenhouses.

I would not have been very happy either. I look and look and pick the ones I think I will like. I'm not always so exited when they bloom as I am hoping to be. But I guess I have never hated one yet. How can one hate an orchid bloom.

It seems like he should have e-mailed you and let you tell him what you wanted to do.

That's what I figured. I had ordered mine well in advance and he had promptly replied to thank me and say they were set aside with my name. So they were available then. Later we added more for other members but within the time limit specified. First I heard of the substitutions was when he was handing them over, and he didn't say I could refuse them or anything. But I didn't ask because I had no idea what other members would want to do with the substitutions. Oh well, a small problem in the big scheme of things.
