Brassavola is an interesting genus. I wish more species were readily available.
After seeing how well my B. perrinii did mounted, I want to mount all my Brassavola. This one is mounted on a piece of Crepe Myrtle from a branch that I cut down. This is a great wood for mounting btw. Last Summer it grew like a weed when I was dunking it in a bucket of fertilizer water every day. This Summer I have all my mounted plants under a shade cloth and a sprinkler on a timer. It doesn't get fertilized very often unfortunately.

I could not detect any fragrance. It seems like it should be.

I also grow all my Brassavola mounted. They are all doing quite well though I have lost some new growths to rot. So be carefull with watering when temps are below 70F and provide good airflow.

I guess this is a genus that likes it HOT. My society had a speaker from Canada this past month who said nodosa didn't grow that well there. I was shocked. I assumed it grew well every where.

Every time I tell myself "NO MORE ORCHIDS" I run across something like this on the forums. Now I realized I need a small night fragrant Cattleya alliance collection, I'll take B. retusa, B. glauca, and E. nocturnum. Fortunately for me, I don't think I have quite enough light for these things, so I can convince myself to let them live with people who do have the right conditions.

Yes. It occurs mostly on my subulifolia which is from Jamaica.
Never had problems with my perrinii.
The problem was dripping mounts above. Since I make sure the new growths dry quickly, the subulifolia is doing quite well, even in not so hot Switzerland.

@mrhappypotter:
Not every Brassavola requires very high light. B. cucullata, flagellaris, perrinii turn red much quicker than my nodosa, I had to put them in lower light.

The easiest one in my (intermediate) conditions seems to be the perrinii. Never had problems with it.

I have seen nodosa and cucullata x nodosa grown as large masses of plant dangling from a hanger, no medium, no container. I just got a small nodosa seedling so I'm trying again with these. I can only guess I watered too much in the past and kept them outside, where summer nights are too hot for them.

These guys can only be mounted like this with adequate humidity (~60% or more). I wouldn't put a mounted Brassavola outside in AZ!

I wasn't clear - I would never think of putting any orchid I just received outside here, except perhaps during a few weeks in early spring or late fall. The only orchids I put outside during summer are some Eulophias, and they are terrestrials in mostly shade.
