Yes I can't believe it either, this plant is not particulary robust. I have had it about 1.5 years.
But it put out one smallish growth this spring and glory be it has a sheath. I have about 5 cattleya and did not expect this one to sheath. Let's see if it blooms

update
There is a bud in there after all. I'm concerned because it has a way to go and it is Fall in North Carolina. I have a few orchids in bud and they seem to be slowing development with the cooler temps. They may blast in the cold or blast if I move them.

Nice! It'll probably bloom next summer.

Just looking at the pictures of the plant it appears it's not getting enough light. Are you growing it under a solid roof? It need a 50% shade cloth from sun up to sun down. The floppy leave are a sign this plant desperately wants more light.
Sorry, don't mean to be so critical. I just feel it's something most Orchid growers need to hear.

No you are probably right and I appreciate you noticing– this is the first summer outside for this plant and it gets morning sun it's really doing fine!

This plant was grown from back bulbs. It has just got its roots back and like I said it put out one shoot I think it is very healthy plant despite the way it looks and will do very good next year this is a very hard species to grow. I am very proud to have it!

It is indeed a big achievement, from what I read, to just keep it alive! You are one step ahead, and you have a sheath!!!
I have a baby C. aurea growing, and I bow at the sight of your photos
In your middle picture I see some dark spots, perhaps you might need to check it for intruders?
