Citrina twins in flower! Male
Wink Citrina twins in flower!

Hi everybody,

Two of my citrina's are in flower now with a lovely strong citrus fruity fragrance. It is the first time for me to see this species in flower 'live'! Seen a lot of pictures of it, and sometimes at an orchidshow bud never so up close. Just love them, they look like if they are made out of a glossy wax. They almost shine when the light hits them.

Could anyone tell me what the correct name is (at the moment) Encyclia, Prosthechea, Euchile? Thnks!

Beautiful and well grown, Pat! This is one of my favorite orchid species, I find the fragrance slightly addictive when mine is in bloom.

Prosthechea is the genus name currently accepted by Kew's World Checklist of Selected Plant Families. I've heard there's also a relatively recent subdivision of citrina into 2 or 3 distinct species, but I can't tell you much more than that.

Thnks Nat! I know what you mean, every time i pass them i just have a quick 'smell' too!!

I will add an extra plantlabel to them with Prostechea citrina on it, so they are correctly named! Very interesting that they are also making a subdivision in 2 or 3 distinct species! I have a few citrina's, two are still in bud, and i noticed that one bud has a different shape then the other ones, it is much more plump and rounded... Now i'm even more curious if the flower is going to be different....

Very nice! According to OrchidWiz, they are Euchile citrina or Epidendrim citrinum. But don't worry, by next month it will be something else!

Lol, i know what you mean Silken, it is just soooooo confusing sometimes, i think this poor orchid has had 6 or 7 different names, maybe even more...

Awesome! This is one that I've had on the "must have" list for some time but have yet to run across one for sale anywhere.

Yours are very, very nice!
