Steve, the humidity swings are all year long and do not have any particular duration. The weather here can be pretty crazy! And 50% humidity is within the Cattleya "sweet zone" of between 50-60%, so I would definitely not panic when your RH drops to this level.
Francisco Miranda came through Texas this month to give his lectures. He took us on a tour of Brazil with respect to the various biomes that Cattleyas can be found, and the area where amethystoglossa and aclandiae are found doesn't necessarily get much of a rest. This explains why I've got a bunch of both species that are all in various stages of growth. If you can keep your temperatures up, I probably would just keep watering these guys all year long and see if you can get an extra growth out of them each year.
