I just received a Cattleya Trianaei lead division which has been recently potted in sphagnum moss. This is the only Cattleya I have that is potted in Spagnum. All the others have been potted in bark or rock mixtures. The only exceptions are the ones I've repotted into a leica SH system.
Should I be at all concerned? I'm thinking I should leave it until it has some time to adjust and start sending out roots before going SH or a different mixture.
I would eventually repot it but there's no hurry. Just be very carefully watering. It should get completely dry and stay dry for a couple days before watering again.
Catts in spag can work, but typically in dry climates and with growers who are very experienced in this type of media. I'd say Tucker is right about changing the media at some point, but wait until its putting out new roots.
I appreciate all the wonderful responses. I've got them under metal halide indoors for the time being, and my humidity is running about 70%. I will keep a close eye on it. My other orchid species in sphag take forever to dry out...lol. This will just be a new challenge until the roots start and I can re pot it.
Sphagnum moss works well if the pot is small and there are lots of roots to use up the water quickly. I only ever use it in a basket-type pot so that it dries more evenly. Red lava rock is my choice for large Cattleyas and I put the smaller ones in LECA. I always use basket pots. In this set up, it is pretty difficult to rot the roots.
