cattleya x duveenii
Hello all,
This summer cattleya x duveenii bloomed for the first time. It has a very distinct smell and a lovely color. I hope you enjoy!
Greetings, Bindi

Hi Silken,
You're not the only one . I ran into it by accident. Took me a while to find some info how to grow it... .
It's a natural hybrid between C. guttata × C. harrisoniana from SE Brazil. I grow it in a clay pot with bark in my windowsill (NE side). Intermediate cattleya temps. When in growth twice a week water (one time with fertilizer). In rest once a week water with fertilizer. Needs to dry out between waterings.
I give a good amount of light (with morning sun in summer).
And of course lots of love .
Greetings, Bindi

I did some looking after seeing your photo and found the same info. Wonder why they call it cattleya x duveenii instead of guttata x harrisonia, or C. duveenii??? There are so many Cattleyas. But that is how I always saw it named in my searches.
It's lovely anyways and I wish I had one.

Hi Silken,
The 'x' between cattleya and duveenii means that it is a natural hybrid (as opposed to human made hybrids which do not have the 'x' in the name).
The reason it is not called guttata x harrisoniana is, that is is a (sort of) species, so it has it's own name.
I know there has been a lot of confusion about the name. Sometimes it is misspelt (duvenii, duveni and other typos). Also, there is a laelia duveenii. Mr. Van den Berg has done fantastic DNA research. This research shows that this laelia (duveenii) is in fact a cattleya. But as cattleya x duveenii already is taken laelia duveenii needs to be renamed. As far as I know this has not taken place yet.
At least, that's what I have understood. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Greetings, Bindi

Very interesting, thanks. Orchid naming can sure be complicated!
