Hi Silken,
The 'x' between cattleya and duveenii means that it is a natural hybrid (as opposed to human made hybrids which do not have the 'x' in the name).
The reason it is not called guttata x harrisoniana is, that is is a (sort of) species, so it has it's own name.
I know there has been a lot of confusion about the name. Sometimes it is misspelt (duvenii, duveni and other typos). Also, there is a laelia duveenii. Mr. Van den Berg has done fantastic DNA research. This research shows that this laelia (duveenii) is in fact a cattleya. But as cattleya x duveenii already is taken laelia duveenii needs to be renamed. As far as I know this has not taken place yet.
At least, that's what I have understood. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Greetings, Bindi
