Cattleya Hawaiian Carolina 'Lavender'

Got this from EOM last year. It's the first time blooming. Had 4 buds forming. Purchased as Lc. (Shellie Compton x Lucille Small) 'Lavender'. The petals are a light pink albeit more pink than in the photo. Oddly the sepals are insignificant.
How is it that there was a clonal name but not a registered GREX name?

Clonal names are used to identify one particular plant. Some growers are in the business of finding orchids that they feel are suitable for mericloning. A grower like this may find an unnamed cross that he wants to mericlone. If he isn't the breeder, he may have difficulty registering the plant, so instead, he just gives his plant a clonal name so that, in the future, buyers will know what plant their mericlone came from and what it should look like. Usually if a plant is cloned and it becomes popular, it will eventually be given a name and registered. That won't change the clonal name, which will stay with the new name. I hope this isn't too confusing.

Ok, great information Tucker. Is it a problem registering a plant if you didn't breed it? Don't you just pay the $40 or what ever it is? I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge with me.

Here is another picture with all the flowers open except the first. I pollinated it. You can see the fruit forming on the left. I crossed it with a nodosa. I doubt the pink lip would come out in the cross but it would be nice.
