I wouldn't say they are short lived on this. The first spike this year was open a couple of months in my greenhouse, not sure exactly but it certainly didn't seem short lived. I removed that just before the photos of the second spike were taken which had only just fully opened. Conditions have now changed as the plant has come inside for the winter, not sure how long this one will last.

Just as a note, the second spike of flowers, which opened indoors rather than in the greenhouse was quite short lived. The one in the greenhouse stayed open ages in comparison. Just thought that might be interesting to note.
