I've been researching catt alliance plants that like a cooler drier winter, and found that the guarianthe aurantiaca fits into this category. Since jewel box has an aurantiaca parent should it receive similar treatment for better bloom?
Are there many other catt alliance genus or species that like this same winter rest? Will they be likely to pass this need on to hybrids made from them?
Most complex hybrids are pretty forgiving of just many growing conditions, including a cool, dry winter rest. Most of the Mexican Laelia (anceps, speciosa, etc.) do very well with such conditions. Cattleya walkeriana and nobilior also require a dry winter and can handle cool temps as long as they're bone dry.
