Help with C. skinneri winter rest
Default Help with C. skinneri winter rest

Hi everyone. I bought this great looking C. skinneri from another member at the San Francisco Orchid Society two months ago. Four new leads with sheaths and six or so mature bulbs. I did my research and was all set to start cutting back on water for the winter when one of the new leads sent out a single new root about a week ago. It's the only one so far but it looks so happy! Is the plant trying to tell me it's not ready for winter yet? Should I listen? Thanks so much!
Harris

Bifoliate Cattleyas from Central America want a bit more water and humidity, but I would start giving a normal winter rest now.

Many species of Cattleyas will throw new roots during their dormant period. In fact, I've noticed the best root growth from my Catts during their dry season. Many people will also tell you that dry conditions promote root growth in many species as the roots branch out in search of water. Giving this one its winter rest right now will not harm it at all.
