Default Laelia splendida "Cauca"

Lip not quite as dark as some of the Caucas, but a nice shade nonetheless. This one is from a region of Columbia called Cauca. The plant has gotten quite large beore it has finally decided to bloom.

Holy moly!! How tall is this beauty? Is it planted in a palm stump?? I may have found a reason NOT to cut them at ground level and hack them out!! Previous owners went crazy planting palm trees...they are not "low maintenance" trees. Ugh.

Tough to grow that baby under lights! Nice combination with the lip and petal colors.

Great you can grow it outside in Florida. The more common name for this genus is Schomburgkia. There are many similar species. They are seldom cultivated outside of South America.
Cauca and Magdalena are the two main rivers in Colombia, dividing the Andean ranges. I have seen large clusters of Schomburgkias high up in old trees along the gallery forests, where the meltwaters influence the lowland climate. In nature a single flower stem can bear 30 flowers. And yes, they are tall.

Very attractive! Does this one have a similar scent to tibicinis?
