Great you can grow it outside in Florida. The more common name for this genus is Schomburgkia. There are many similar species. They are seldom cultivated outside of South America.
Cauca and Magdalena are the two main rivers in Colombia, dividing the Andean ranges. I have seen large clusters of Schomburgkias high up in old trees along the gallery forests, where the meltwaters influence the lowland climate. In nature a single flower stem can bear 30 flowers. And yes, they are tall.
