Cattleya maxima varieties
A fall blooming species from Ecuador and Peru.
#1 is a short pseudobulb type, that grows easily without special demands, and when the time has come in September/October it flowers eagerly with up to 12 flowers. Coloration is good, but the shape is fluffy. It's some sort of a 'tipo' and was my first maxima.
#2 can be described as a 'semialba estriata'. It was actually for sale, but I contended with myself and in the end I didn't spend my money for it.
#3 is a 'forma aphlebia', without the typical veins on the lip.
#4 is a blue one or 'coerulea'. Bought it 2 years ago from the same vendor who offered #2 now. I saw the fading flowers then, with a bit Bothritis, but I knew it was good enough to justify the price. The plant struggled and is now recovering, flowering for the first time in my house.

What a gorgeous bunch of maxima's, love the coerulea one with it's pale 'blue' flowers! What do you mean by fluffly? Is it the way the flowers are positioned on the stem, or do you mean that the inner petals of the flower droop a little bit and don't reflex backwards? Just wondering.... Thnks!

Lovely presentation! I have a few of these and they are divine! Like your coerulea, mine struggled too but eventually flowered with one flower this year. It's not as opened and 'blue' as yours but I love it!!

Thank you Euplusia for post the variations of maxima. It is very hard for us to come by species here in Africa and even rarer to have all the colour variations of one species on display like yours. It is wonderful. Thank you.

Nice selection of maxima's, thanks for sharing them. I have only flowered the short-pseudobulb or upland type and it was spectacular, so looking forward to growing more varieties.
