Help with Cattleya ID?
Default Help with Cattleya ID?

Hello!

I know it most likely is impossible to ID an Orchid without a proper name tag, let alone when it doesn't have flowers!

I got this for half-off at the Botanical Gardens (Edinburgh) today as it was out of bloom. I have never had a Cattleya before, and the tag just said "Cattleya Mix". I just wondered if the leaf shape etc could help narrow it down to a type? Or a hybrid? It seems very broad and chunky to me, has a new wee growth too so I will just keep my fingers crossed it flowers...

Anyway, rambling again...here are a few pics

How tall are the pbulbs?
Growth looks like intermedia - could be a hybrid of that, tho there are likely other similar species.

The tallest one at the back is 7 inches (18 cm) and the others are about 4-5 inches (10-13cm) tall

I know it's impossible to tell at this stage but every little helps and if it flowers again I will post them too!

You cannot tell what cattleya it is by just looking at the plant. lol

I assumed it would be impossible, but thought size/leaf shape/colour etc might narrow it down to a less vague "type".

I guess I just have to hope it'll flower or I might never know!

The only thing you can tell is that your plant is bifoliate type, apparently.

and yes, when it blooms, it will be much easier to identify what it is.
It is already a good sized plants, so you should be able to see it flower in the very near future.

Do you think it will only bloom from the newest growing bulb or would one of the older ones bloom? I can see two definite bulbs which have had stalks cut from them, but the others look like they have a little nubbin in the middle which has not emerged...if that makes sense!!

Sorry for all the Newb questions, never seen one of these before so I kinda just grabbed it before someone else did!

The nubs might just be either the top of the pbulbs, or terminal foliage that didn't become sheaths.

It finally flowered! Totally took me by surprise as its not in the sunniest place ever!

Anyway; I appreciate a total ID isn't possible, but any one got any clues on what might be in it?!
