Odd spike, no sheath, Potinara Elizabeth Palmer Male
Default Odd spike, no sheath, Potinara Elizabeth Palmer

Found this unexpected odd spike this morning, developed on my Pot. Elizabeth Palmer 'Sun Bulb'. This was purchased as a seedling a couple years ago, this is a first bloom.

The spike developed recently on a pseudobulb that had developed last fall. No sheath formed last fall, so this was a surprise. I have had a spike develop with no sheath a time or two before on young plants. Usually the blooms that develop are not the best, but they are better the next time around.

I will let this one continue to develop, but the lip is slightly visible on one bud. Usually when I see buds like that, they are often not the best in terms of form. I am hoping the other bud will be formed better.

Has anyone else had Catt. alliance spikes develop without sheaths?

Yes I even had Catts with multiple new growths where some had sheaths but another one would not.

I wouldn't worry about the lip being exposed because this is very common in blooms with very frilly lips.

Enjoy your blooms.

I have had a few cattleyas bloom without sheaths like the trianae, lueddemamania, mossiae, maxima, schroederae, and dorminiana... Most times with full normal blooms... So don't worry!

I have some Catt alliance intergenerics that bloom from sheaths, and without, on the same plant (at the same time, even)

I have a number of them that bloomed without sheaths and also some plants will sometimes produce a sheath and other times not, even at the same time.
