Default Spagnum moss and pine cones

We here in Sweden also have spagnum moss and about 100 different varieties, one of the almost red at the topp. One of them can be used for orchids. The pine cones are new to me. We have plenty of pine upp here in the north. One person mention to me that the cone contain turpentine. I guess it can be washed away? Another thing I have heard is that the cones close up when they get wet or damp. Do you know anything about this? Would then the rots get pinched?
