Brassavola Species ID challange
Default Brassavola Species ID challange

Hey OrchidBoard,

So I have a bit of a challenge for any of those on the forums that consider themselves a Brassavola expert. Attached are some photos of a piece of a Brassavola that I got from my mother. She *swears* that it's B. nodosa, but when you compare it to true B. nodosa, it is obvious even to a layman that they are two different species. After some research, I think I have narrowed it down to either B. flagellaris or B. cucullata. It will be quite obvious to tell them apart when it blooms, but until then, is there any way to know? I'm hoping some orchid expert here will be able to ID it from the roots and single pseudobulb and leaf it has (but it is happy, and growing more as I write).

I'm looking forward to your input,
CJ

Pretty sure you can rule out cucullata, I could see it in the parentage. Why do you think its not a hybrid?

Why does your mom swear its nodosa? Has she seen the blooms?

So I'll be honest with you guys, my mother isn't exactly reliable in the memory department, so perhaps I shouldn't even expect it to be a pure species. The only thing I guess I know with reasonable certainty is that she got it from Orchids by Hausermann out in Chicago, where she use to live. I may just have to wait until it blooms in several years to get any closer to an ID.

Ya, with only one bulb, we can't even see how pendant this one could be. Its tough to tell with so little growth and no flower!
