Blue Hawaii coming back from the dead: Care tips?
Default Blue Hawaii coming back from the dead: Care tips?

Hello!

A month ago I purchased a $5 Lc. Mem. Roberstrait "Blue Hawaii" from an orchid show. When I removed it from the pot it was in, it only had one root left and looked pretty much like it does in the pictures.

However, since I acquired it, it has produced a new growth, which I'm very happy about, and I've noticed two roots beginning to emerge over the past two days.

When I got it I attempted to sphag and bag it, but it started to produce mould, so I've been soaking it for an hour or so every day and leaving it out in some weak sunlight. Seems to be working.

Does anyone who has had an orchid in a similar situation have any care tips or suggestions? How long should the roots be before I pot it? I've never had an orchid in a condition like this before.

Those little bumps on the rhzome are or were roots attempting to emerge. It is also in a growing phase. Water moreso the bulb can get some hydration. I would pot it now with the root section resting on or slightly under the medium. Then water when the top of the medium goes dry. Since there are no burried roots, the middle dosent matter yet. You might even put a top layer of moss but let it dry. I have used newspaper as well. Maybe mist when it goes dry. You should also stake and wire to the stake. The more vibrations, the more chance of breaking new roots. When little root tips emerge, keep moist but let dry before night. The roots should grow downward and burrow into themedium. Do not repot until the medium breaks down like regular.

that's about as far gone as I have ever seen...good luck is about all I can say! I agree with all the above, emphasizing that it must be held solid, with NO WIGGLING at all....those baby roots are your last hurrah as far as growing this one, and you don't want to discourage them! its a nice orchid if you can get it growing....I wish you luck!

Thank you for taking the time to help me

The bumps on the rhizome are where I had to cut the dead roots off. It was just a tangle of very very dead roots. The one brown one that is left was the only root that was still firm.

I will take your advice and pot it solidly, so that the two emerging roots have some media to grab on to. The fact that it's growing quickly is a good sigh, right?

The bumps were on the little baby bud. Emerging roots. Yes. My first language is not english and sometimes I mess up. The old rhyzome will be cannibalized by the new bulb, but you have to set up a good growth situation.
