cats are funny plants...they really don't mind a bit of dry...several weeks of no watering doesn't faze them if they are otherwise healthy....a plant that's stressed out like yours seems to be, will require a bit more attention tho....letting it sit in a glass vase with water at the bottom is really a death sentence....you think you are helping it to keep it moist, but really, you are choking and drowning it....as noted above, they really need loads of air all around the plant! that's why we use very large fast draining media in a small pot...the water runs right thru and doesnt hang around on the roots to suffocate the plant...besides the media in your pot seeming too wet, it seems like it is small media and not very well drained....I agree that hanging it would make more sense at this point....you could 'expand' your shelf by placing a wider plank over it and securing that...sometimes when plants are tipsy in their little pot, I will place the whole thing in a bigger clay pot to provide stability...heck, I have even put several pots around a small one to stabilize it! by using clay, it provides more air circulation and helps dry the plant out too, in addition to holding the plant upright...I don't think hanging upside down will be a good idea, as your new growths will be all wonky when you pot later...it was hard to tell how much light your window receives...cattleyas like a lot of light! good luck!
