Cattleya maxima (almost solid lip)
this is one of 25 different species i got in Peru (some trades, some bought) during last week visit, i do not take credit for this bloom , as it was like that when i bought it in Peru. (picture is in my hotel room, with my cell phone, sadly i had to cut the spikes to fly back the plant.
the reason i bought this one, is because of the dark color, and the quite solid lip. flower size was also off the charts.
took me an hour walking to find an old men with this sitting in the very dark , shady location in a peruvian market.
Cheers!
Antonio.

It's gorgeous! Too bad you had to cut the spikes, but at least you got to enjoy the flowers for a short time.

Very pretty! C. maxima has been a vigorous growing species for me. They seem to be very adaptable.

Wow! Amazing color. Great find.
I am curious. Are orchids pretty common in the markets in Peru? How much did you have to pay for it?

In Ecuador I've seen blooming C. maxima plants on the market for 3-5 USD. They must have been grown in a nursery for at least 3-4 years. Of course the local marketers cannot give the papers needed for export.
Anyway your plant will be happy with your climatic conditions as they are adapting easily.

Its gorgoeus, I love the colour, size, and the shape of the petals.

Great choice, shame you had to cut the spike.
