laelia rubencens
another Mexican plant.
this one is a white variant, (not really uncommon around here) the regular form is more Pinkish.
this is another easy to grow plant (not as easy as anceps, but not much harder) .
Cheers!
Antonio.

Great colors! I'm having some trouble with the one I got earlier this summer from rot. Does this species need super dry conditions in winter?

Steve, share some photos, just to check if the plant is dehydrated , or how far the rot went.
mine is growing near my angracoids, so it is constantly humid.
plant likes to be mounted.
Antonio.

Late night, impromptu pics, so they're not great. I got the plant as a weak cutting from a friend last December (2012) and I thought all the eyes were dead so I was about to throw it away. However, I saw a new lead and kept the plant, but I moved apartments to a shady place (north facing patio and windows) this summer and the growth stayed small and is the one with rot in the picture. It started to throw a spike after the growth was done and I was giving it a dry rest. I watered it, the spike stopped and then the new growth turned black and mushy, though I just it off tonight.
How do you rest your rubescens in the winter? Is it dry like walkeriana or nobilior, but with humidity like you mentioned previously? I've only seen rot happen as quickly as it did on this Laelia with plants that previously had rot and probably still had some left on the plant from a previous infection. I figured a summer outside in Texas heat would get rid of any rot that may have been in the plant to begin with! lol

Steve,
you need to check if the plant has any other possible leads (cant tell because of the pics), but must admit pics does not look good, first thing i would do is mount it, with a bit (not to much) of sphagnum, i always use a bit of sphagnum as it seems to repel a moderate range of fungal infections.
mexican laelias Prefer to be mounted , and do like plenty of air around the root system. they also like humidity during the growth process. (they can tolerate several weeks of dryness) rubencens is a quite sturdy little plant, remember ventilation (constant breeze) is VERY IMPORTANT to avoid Rot on mexican laelias, a cheap tiny house hold fan , can do the trick.
for those looking to grow Mexican Laelias please download this ENGLISH PDF , hosted by the AMO (mexican orchid association). it contains lots of information if you desire to know more about this plants, if there is something not covered, i am more than willing to help or assist.

Steve, if your plant ends up with a no go, i do have a nice strong division i can gift it to you, i could bring it to the states and ship it to your house as we did last time, i should visit vegas. on Jan 2014
let me know how it goes, and BTW, apologies i never called that sunday, will do ASAP, (during this weekend maybe? if it is ok with you)

Antonio,
I'll be around on Sunday, so we should talk then! Thanks for the tips with this species. I think I got a cutting that was already in trouble and my lack of experience with this species led to a poor result. I'm not sure if this plant has any other eyes, but it is an oscura variety so I hope it can still grow!
